Bethany Lutheran Church

A Great Commision Congregation

Serve

At Bethany Lutheran Church, service is taken seriously. As God's people, it is not an option for us to fail in growth and service. We seek to strengthen you in your discipleship. That strengthening happens in two ways. First, we will help you grow in your faith. Second, we will find you a place to serve. Below is a partial list of service opportunities at Bethany. If you are interested in serving or would like more information you may call the church office at (562)421-4711 or email serve@bethanylutheran.org.

Service Opportunities for You @ BLC

Acolytes/Crucifers: Acolytes help everyone prepare for worship by serving as the ones who bear the "Light" which illuminates the darkness. They serve as assistants to Pastor during communion, offering, etc. Crucifers carry the cross into and out of the church at the beginning and end of service as we follow Him into the world. Youth in grades 5-12 may apply to serve.

Bookstore: Noah's Place: Bethany has its very own bookstore located in Friendship Square. Our store offers a variety of Christian books, Bibles, cards, as well as videos that you may check out. It is open after Sunday morning services. Volunteers are needed to run the store, generally for a 1-hour, once-a-month, shift.

Boy Scouts Troop 75 - Visit their website!

Chimer's Circle: This circle is responsible for getting the church mailing out every month and also other special mailings. They collate, fold, label, staple, and sort by zip codes. Members serve approximately 3 hours once-a-month.

Church Repair & Maintenance: If you are a handyman or enjoy lawn and gardening upkeep and wish to share this God-given talent with Bethany, then contact our Board of Trustees to put this gift to use.

Community Impact Committee - Their website is under construction & coming soon!

Friendship Group for Seniors: This group is open to all over 55 years of age and meets on the third Wednesday of each month for a luncheon and fellowship activity. Meetings start at 11:00 a.m.

Greeters: Before each worship service, greeters make each worshipper feel welcome by providing a welcome presence.

Knitting & Crocheting Ministry: This ministry meets for fellowship as we work on knitting or crocheting projects to be given to hospitals, shut-ins, and anyone else in need of some warm comfort.

Lay Reader/Lector: Lectors read the Word of God in the worship service in a way that bears witness to God's Word given to His people.

Lutheran Braille Workers: These workers prepare Christian Braille materials and books of the Bible in many languages. Bethany has its own Lutheran Braille Center on campus. These materials are distributed worldwide.

Lutheran Women in Mission League (LWML): The LWML is composed of serveral circles with different jobs within the church including: communion preparation and clean-up; care of altar linens, candles, robes; assistance with weddings and funerals; decorating the Sanctuary for special services; delivering altar flowers and sermon tapes. Each circle has a monthly Bible study.

  • Care Circle: The Care Circle glorifies God by providing home-cooked meals for new moms, shut-ins, and those recovering from surgery or illness. Volunteers prepare food and deliver it to the home or church as needed.
  • Chancel Circle: The Chancel Circle's main function is to keep the altar and chancel areas of the church clean and in order for each service. This includes preparing for and cleaning up after communion services, ordering all fair linens, communion ware furnishings, and collection of donations for these services. Volunteers also work on mission projects.
  • Joy Circle: The Joy Circle keeps an active list of all military people and college students, keeping in touch with cards and care packages. Volunteers deliver flowers to shut-ins, those living in Senior Citizen homes, as well as taking worship service tapes to homebound members.
  • Wedding Circle: The Wedding Circle takes care of all wedding receptions held at the church. They also do a variety of receptions including anniversary, graduation or Eagle Scout.

Moms in Touch International: This is a worldwide inter-denominational group that meets to pray for children and schools. The Bethany group hosts a meeting for mothers (and others) who pray for children and schools.

Music Ministry: Bethany has many opportunities to let your voice or musical instrument sing praise to our Lord. Our choirs include senior, youth, and school choirs. We also offer handbells and chimes. Please contact Dr. Carol McDaniel, our Minister of Music, at ext. 14 or cmcdaniel@bethanylutheran.org.

Nursery: The nursery volunteers provide love and care for little ones during worship services, Bible studies, and other church special events.

Project Task Force: meets as needed to work on church projects, funeral luncheons, etc.

Usher Ministry: Ushers serve as hosts for God, not only in expressing the church's warm welcome, but also in looking after the needs and comforts of all our worshippers. Ushers provide leadership, friendliness, hospitality, order and reverence to worshippers. They assist worshippers to find their seats, distribute printed materials, assist with the collection of offerings and Holy Communion.
