Heroes...Searching the Scriptures of our Parish Theme

This month we focus on the Hero Philip, who is remembered for his gift of teaching. The study this month follows an adapted form of Lectio Divina, which is an “ancient future” way to read and study God’s Holy Word. The eight steps suggested can work well for all ages of family members. Parents may have to rephrase the questions and help guide answers with younger children.

Please begin with a word of prayer:

Heavenly Father, guide our family as we study your word together. May our hearts be open to the truth your Holy Spirit desires to teach us. In the Name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Then use the following steps, in order, as you study God’s word together.

Step One:
Lectio…Read God’s Word Aloud. The chosen text for this month is: Acts 8:26-40

Step Two:
Meditatio…Reflect on what this passage may be teaching you about God. For example: God speaks to people.

Step Three:
Oratio…Pray and give thanks. What does this passage remind me to be thankful for? After making a list, take time to pray. For example: We might thank God for the baptism of the eunuch & we might also thank Him for our own baptisms.

Step Four:
Meditatio…Have I seen evidence of these truths (refer to step two and three) in other Bible stories? For example:The Lord spoke to Saul on the road to Damascus. The disciples baptized over 3000 people on Pentecost Day.

Step Five:
Oratio…Pray and confess your sins. After making a list of sins you are led to think about, take time to confess them to Jesus, knowing He will forgive them all. For example: Sometimes I don’t take time to listen to God. Please forgive me, Jesus.

Step Six:
Incarnatio…What truth(s) has God made real in my life? For example: There are people who don’t know God’s story.

Step Seven:
Tentatio…What truth or promise do I struggle with? What is hard for me to understand? For example: How will I know the Spirit is really talking to me?

Step Eight:
Contemplatio…What truth or promise of God can I treasure in my heart today? For example: Baptism can be a life-changing experience.
