The Story in Review-  Chapter Eleven

From Shepherd to King, the chapter sounds like the ultimate rags to riches story.  On the one had that is what it is.  However, perhaps a better chapter would be “A Shepherd and King.”  God had warned Israel what they would get when they requested a king.   David, as Saul before him and all subsequent kings after him, was at his best when he acted like a Shepherd who sought to tend, protect, nourish and care for the people.  David, as Saul before him and all subsequent kings after him, was at his worst when he acted like a king who could do anything he wanted and take anything he desired.

One of the reasons David is called a man after Gods’ own heart is David’s shepherding nature.  God, King of the Universe, is the Shepherd of His people.  In David’s shepherding moments we see one who honors God above all things and serves as a type of the Shepherd to come who will also be known as the Lamb of God.
