Bethany Lutheran School's Plan for In-Person Instruction

July 2020 Update

Bethany Lutheran School is committed to the physical, mental, social-emotional and spiritual health and safety of your child, your family, and our staff throughout the COVID19 pandemic. We are also committed to a successful start of the school year and an outstanding educational experience for your child. Here’s our plan for 2020-2021:

  1. Rich and exceptional educational experience beginning September 1
  2. On-campus, face-to-face instruction with plans in place for students whose personal health requires them to learn-from-home
  3. Full school day
  4. Extended daycare before and after school
  5. Study hall after school for Grades 3-8
  6. Continued exceptional teaching and learning
  7. Safe and secure campus
    1. PE, music, art, electives, etc. will continue, as guidelines allow
    2. Large group gatherings such as chapel modified for safety
  8. Full preparation for a return to “learn-from-home,” if pandemic conditions require it
  9. Faith-filled culture, centered on Jesus Christ and His promises for us

We are sifting through the advice of several sources as we design our health and safety protocols.  The CDC, the California Department of Health, the Los Angeles County Board of Health and the California Department of Education have all put forth guidelines for schools. These are guidelines, not mandates. Each school and district is left to make the decision that best fits their population within the binding protocols of their counties/cities. Health orders have not been released yet for Long Beach specifically, so we are making our plans using the information we have on hand.  We are also considering advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics and our own Lutheran Schools-Pacific Southwest District.

Bethany’s plan will address the following:

  • Arrival and departure of students
  • Daily and ongoing screening staff and students
  • Staff and/or students who become sick or are exposed to COVID19
  • Students whose personal health requires them to learn from home
  • Promoting healthy hygiene practices
  • Intensified cleaning and disinfection
  • Physical distancing of staff and students
  • Face coverings
  • Hydration and lunches
  • Forgotten supplies
  • Ventilation of classrooms
  • Use of outdoor spaces for learning and play
  • Return to learning-from-home in the event of a surge

Finally, two words from the Lord for these extraordinary times:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

“Do not be frightened by the size of the task.  Be strong and courageous and get to work.  For the Lord my God is with you. He will not forsake you. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly.  I Chronicles 28:20
